Paul was born in Huddersfield iin 1964 and has been deaf from birth. After gaining a music degree from Wadham College, Oxford, and a post-graduate diploma from the RNCM he founded “Music and the Deaf” and ran that for 27 years before leaving in 2015 to pursue a freelance career.
For many years Paul signed major musical productions in the West End and on tour, and has also signed at the BBC Proms, Edinburgh International Festival and Aldeburgh Festival. He still signs for Opera North and for several years worked with The Sixteen. Recently he has been working with the National Youth Choir of GB.
Paul works regularly with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra on their “Feel the Music” project which has taken him across Europe and to Hong King and Macau. Earlier this year he advised on an integrated deaf/hearing opera project in Gothenburg,
He is in great demand as a signed song workshop leader and adjudicator and creates signed song resources for the “Friday Afternoons” project run by Aldeburgh Music. He has just begun a 2-year project funded by Youth Music looking at Signing Choirs for young people and how they can be developed.
In 2007 he was awarded an OBE for Services to Music and holds Honorary Degrees from the University of Huddersfield and the Open University.
Paul has worked in the local area often since the early days of Sing Up. His session will give participants repertoire and ideas for using BSL (British Sign Language) in their singing work.
